Can we hold religions responsible for the evil that its followers commit?

I think we can hold it responsible when it incites, encourages, or even turns a blind eye to it as in some cases I've seen many evangelical Christians do in the case of the man who killed the doctor who provided abortion services. While they may be reticent to come out openly and applaud it I've seen them in the anonymity of the internet approve it. Its not the same to say religion is like the gun, its more like a friend who tells another friend how awful the victim is and how they should be stopped and then leaves a loaded weapon in their possession. In some cases it can be worse then that, jihad camps where they specifically train people to kill for religious beliefs.
